What’s Dr. Barnett’s Future within the U.D.P.?

Carla Barnett

Barnett first entered politics in 2015 when she was endorsed as the U.D.P. candidate for Freetown, but she was bested by Francis Fonseca in the last General Elections.  Barnett was made Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance through an appointment to the Senate.  She was subsequently made Minister of State for Natural Resources before being demoted to the Ministry of Labor, Local Government and Rural Development.  So with Sunday’s results, has Barnett’s senate tenure come to an end? That’s what we asked her and aspiring U.D.P. leader Patrick Faber.

Dr. Carla Barnett, Former U.D.P. Standard Bearer, Freetown

“It is entirely in the purview of the Prime Minister. I don’t think that is something I should even comment on.”

“But you can resign.”

Dr. Carla Barnett

“But why would I? This is about going forward.

“But I am saying perhaps that the only reason you would to stay in there is because you got in there to be political viable.”

Dr. Carla Barnett

“Not at all. You remember that I came in to the senate; I came in as minister separate and apart from anything that had to do with it. It is entirely up to the Prime Minister to decide how he may want to use my skills and capabilities.”

Patrick Faber

Patrick Faber, Deputy Prime Minister

“While it is that as representatives, you can argue a lot about any of those two names that you just called. None can dispute that in terms of their work as minister they have been stellar. Look at the kind of work that Dr. Barnett in helping out the CWU and the Port. And no one can argue that Michael Peyrefitte, is a stellar Attorney General so no such thoughts are being contemplated by me or anybody who supports me at this time. I can assure you of that. We believe that our colleagues do that kind of work as Ministers with the greatest of quality and we support them in that respect.”
