Taxi Operator Perishes in RTA

Arthur Requeña

There was a fatal road traffic accident in the city today. Fifty-six-year-old taxi operator, Arthur Requeña was knocked down on the Philip Goldson Highway in front of the Easy Inn Hotel. An eyewitness tells News Five that Requeña parked on the opposite side of the highway and was walking across the road when he was struck by a pickup truck belonging to the Belize Agricultural Health Authority. The impact sent the taxi operator several feet away to the pavement and he suffered severe head and body injuries; Requeña passed away minutes later at the K.H.M.H. The driver has since been detained and police are investigating whether speeding may have been a factor.

“Sometime after eleven in the morning, police visited two and a half miles on the Phillip Goldson Highway, almost in front of Easy Inn Hotel where they observed a male person lying on the ground with severe injuries to the body. The male person was transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital where he died shortly afterwards. He was identified as Mister Arthur Orlando Requeña, a fifty-six-year-old taxi driver. What we understand is that Mister Requeña had just dropped off a family member at the hotel and he went down from the direction of Haulover Bridge to Pallotti and he took the first roundabout and come back again like he went to Haulover Bridge. He stopped on the other side of the road in front of Easy Inn and he came out and began to yell for the person that he just dropped off. He went and crossed the median and as soon as he crossed, a vehicle was coming from the direction of Haulover towards Pallotti where he was knocked down. The driver of the vehicle is presently in police custody and providing a statement.”
