Belize City Fire Guts 2 Houses, Leaving 9 Persons Homeless

In October, we reported on the attempted arson at the home of Belize City resident Andre Diaz. But tonight, the news is dire for Diaz, since this time, her house was destroyed by fire. The fire broke out sometime after ten o’clock on Tuesday night and spread to her mother’s house, damaging the structure.  While fire officials have yet to establish the cause of the blaze, Diaz believes that it might have been arson, stemming from the first attempt three weeks ago. News Five’s Hipolito Novelo reports.

Nine persons are homeless tonight after a fire gutted two houses on Consuelo Street, Belize City, on Tuesday night. The fire broke out at around eleven thirty p.m.

Andre Diaz, Fire Victim

I wasn’t at home. I was at a friend’s. I just left after ten thirty, I left my home. The only thing I left on was my light which is what I always do. When I got the message and by the time I arrived home, saw the two houses. My one completely gone.”

The fire began somewhere in Andre Diaz’s one-room board house, destroying it completely. From there, the inferno quickly spread to her mother’s adjacent house- partially destroying the structure. Those inside the house ran out and were not injured. Diaz lost everything to the blaze.

Andre Diaz

I could not save anything, everything was in there. As you guys saw a couple of weeks ago when they tried to burn it down in the arson. My mother’s one finally got caught and left us both homeless.”

Three weeks ago, Diaz was a victim of attempted arson. Someone threw a bottle filled with accelerant at Diaz’s home but while the fire was lit, quick response from neighbors and firefighters prevented it from spreading. This time, however, the damage could have been fatal. Fire officials are still investigating, trying to determine if it was arson.

Andre Diaz, Fire Victim

They haven’t clarified that as yet, if it an arson or if it started from the inside of the house. They have not gotten back to me with that answer as yet.”

“And what do you believe?”

Andre Diaz

“At this time, I just have to believe from the first could have lead to the second. Thank God no one got hurt. My mother, my mom’s husband, sister, and niece got out o the house on time just that we could not have saved anything as much like personal stuff, documents that we really need and memories. Nothing was saved but thanks God for the lives.”

And now, Diaz and her family are struggling to put the pieces back together in order to restore their lives.

Andre Diaz, Fire Victim

“I just feel really devastated because I am not used to be under people’s rood begging lodging. I am not used to it which is why since I was young I try to have my own for them to just take it in a blink of an eye from me. I would just anyone to reach out and assist me. I don’t really want clothes because I can get those on my own. I just want some assistance like money through my bank account or anyone who can come and drop off some cement blocks, board or even some help to build back my house.”

If you would like to assist Diaz you can contact cell phone numbers six-six-five-seven-eight-five-two or six-five-three-nine-eight-four-two. Reporting for News Five, I am Hipolito Novelo.

In related news, a fire also destroyed the home of sixty-nine-year-old Juan Antonio Perez of Bladen Village.  It happened sometime between November first and the seventh. He told police that he left his home secured and upon returning he discovered that his twelve feet by eight feet wooden structure had been destroyed by fire. Perez also reported to police that his house was not connected to the grid and was valued as five thousand dollars.
