The Body of a Newborn is Found Buried in Trio

Joseph Myvett

The body of a seven-month baby was unearthed from a shallow grave in southern Belize. The remains were found at Trio Village in the backyard of Dominga Maku, the Guatemalan mother of the child. The baby died within twenty-four hours of birth and was buried on Monday. It is known that the mother did not carry out the normal pregnancy checkups and the cause of death of the child is also not known. The police, however, are investigating what went wrong and have questioned the mother.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Also yesterday, sometime after eleven a.m., Independence police responded to an information in Trio Village where they spoke to one Dominga Muku, a thirty-nine-year-old Guatemalan domestic of the said village whom, after interviewing her, police proceeded to the back of the yard where they discovered a small shallow grave from which was exhumed the body of a baby in a decomposed state.  The body was removed from there where a postmortem examination was held late yesterday evening.  According to the forensic information, the body is twenty-eight weeks old, premature and the cause of death was undetermined.  Police are seeking one person for questioning in relation to this investigation.”

“Now sir, a lot of people may not be clear on this because we know that there are traditional practices in these areas, perhaps, and it’s impossible for me to know, but in the event of a miscarriage or something like that, perhaps from a traditional perspective it would be handled within the family, but it is a crime.”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Yes.  What happened is that the child was born alive.  It’s a baby girl that was born alive on Sunday and according to the information, the child became motionless on Monday afternoon.”

“So in a situation like this, what kind of offense did these people commit in taking that baby and burying it in their backyard, as opposed to taking it to the hospital or bringing it to the police’s attention?”

ACP Joseph Myvett

“Well, from our information it has also shown that at no point did the mother of the baby attend any clinic or had no contact with any medical authority during her pregnancy.  Well, pending the investigation, possibly charges depending on the evidence, it could be concealment at birth.”
