Dealing with Unbudgeted Expenses at City Hall

Oscar Arnold

Since taking office earlier this year, the Council has had to deal with unbudgeted expenses relating to the movement of staff. Some moved on others were left go. But the Deputy Mayor says they have put in systems to buffer the tight months.

Oscar Arnold, Deputy Mayor, Belize City Council

“Being a responsible council you know that whenever you have staff that is leaving or let go, that there is a amount of money that is owing to them; once that calculation is done, then you work out on what basis that will be done—whether in a lump sum or whether on a periodic basis. So yes, there has been some issues at the council because you know that in the past the period, July to September/October has been very tumultuous. This council has put stuff in place that you didn’t get the sense or the feeling that you couldn’t pay staff; that payroll was late. So the schedule of payment will continue; it is nothing that we will run from.”
