PC Osbourne Martinez Killed in the Line of Duty

Osbourne Martinez

Newsrooms across the city were spread thin since early this morning as a number of robberies, drug seizures, accidents and a murder unfolded. We start with the shooting death of an on-duty cop, who responded to an armed robbery in downtown Belize City, this Friday morning.  Twenty-seven-year-old police constable Osbourne Martinez lost his life when he came face to face with one of three thieves who were fleeing after robbing the Belcove Hotel on Regent Street West.  It occurred in the presence of hundreds of residents in the heart of the city near the Swing Bridge and in proximity to the Holy Redeemer Primary School. We’ll have full details of this deadly shooting as the family of the young cop reels from his untimely death.  News Five’s Hipolito Novelo reports.

A brazen mid-morning robbery in downtown Belize City resulted in the death of a police officer. This security footage shows twenty-seven year old P.C. one-three-nine-seven Osbourne Martinez lying face down on Regent Street West, in front of Belcove Hotel. He had been shot once to the abdomen. The bullet penetrated his rib cage, causing internal bleeding. Martinez was rushed to the K.H.M.H. by his fellow officers but, unfortunately, he died while undergoing surgery. Martinez died a hero, responding to a report of an armed robbery at Belcove Hotel.

Chester Williams, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Operations)

Sometime around 10 a.m. this morning, police were called to the Belcove area. That is right on Regent Street West, where information was received of a robbery in progress. Upon arriving at the location, the police officers who responded were shot at by one of the suspects. The police officer received one single gunshot wound to the right rib cage area. He was doing his Godly duties, trying to help people, and was injured in the process. It is a sad day for us, but we hope and pray that the good Lord will pull him through.

It was a single shot that caused Martinez’s death; that shot was reportedly fired by one of three men who police managed to arrest at the scene of the robbery now turned murder.

One of the would-be robbers was shot to the foot as the trio attempted to escape with the loot and murder weapon using the Haulover Creek. Their escape was thwarted by police officers who were escorting San Pedro detainees off a boat on the other side of the creek. Upon receiving the reports a shootout ensued between the armed robbers and police officers. PC Martinez is said to be one of the police officers who responded to the report first.

Minister of State in the Ministry of National Security Elodio Aragon expressed his sorrow and anger at the incident. Aragon writes that, “It is always a sad day when someone is killed, but when a member of the security forces is killed while trying to protect and serve the community, it is indeed a cause for consternation. I hereby put on record my full condemnation of this vile act by these thugs who seem to have wanton disregard for life and property. These individuals who seem to want to defy law and order all the time will be dealt with by the police.” Aragon promises that “the perpetrators of this crime will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.”

ACP Chester Williams writes to PC Martinez, “you are taken away from us too early; but you died a hero.” Prime Minister Dean Barrow visited the family of PC Martinez today while they were at the morgue. A statement from the Government Press Office says that the Government of Belize ‘mourns the loss of a heroic officer who gave his life for citizen safety.’ Reporting for News Five, I am Hipolito Novelo.
