Bert Vasquez Appears Before the Court of Appeal Unrepresented

Bert Vasquez

Convicted inmate Bert Vasquez has been extended a final lifeline in an attempt to appeal a guilty verdict handed down by the Supreme Court in July 2017.  This morning, he appeared before the Court of Appeal without an attorney.  The absence of legal representation promptly raised questions from the bench since it is the second time that Vasquez has shown up without a lawyer.  He explained to the court that on a previous occasion his counsel was out of the country.  Subsequently, there has been some difficulty in reaching attorney Herbert Panton, who is reportedly in possession of Vasquez’s case files.  Vasquez is serving a ten-year prison sentence for the forcible abduction and aggravated sexual assault of a minor into a vehicle he was driving.  The incident took place in 2011, while the victim was sixteen-years-old.  She testified that Vasquez took her to an area in Vista del Mar where he proceeded to hit her with a firearm, injuring her nose and face, before sexually assaulting her.  Despite maintaining his innocence, Vasquez is spending concurrent sentences.  The matter was adjourned until the January session of the Court of Appeal at which time he must have an attorney or the matter will proceed with him being unrepresented.
