They come from as far away as Taiwan, Korea and the People’s Republic of China and as near El Salvador, Panama and Cuba. These foreign students, along with their Belizean counterparts, all attend the U.B.’s Regional Language Centre in Belmopan. Jacqueline Woods visited the campus this morning to get a taste of the different countries.

It’s one time when you get to sample the different cultures of the world. Every year the University of Belize Regional Language Centre holds an International Fest presented by the local and foreign students.

Lydia Loskot, Dir., U.B. Regional Language Centre

“All of the countries bring something unique, a new dynamic to what we do. We are about to break down, remove communication barriers throughout the entire region.”

Through the exhibits, the students learn about each other’s traditions, but most importantly by the time the Fest takes place the young men and women are able to converse in English…the language they came to learn at U.B.

“These are presentations not only about their class work, which we did back in December, today they have also featured their cuisine, local dances, costumes and what is the unique element of being from a different cultural community.”

Presently, U.B.’s Regional Language Centre hosts students from ten different countries. Jacqueline Woods reporting for News 5.

The International Fest was held in conjunction with U.B. Week.
