SWU Protests Following Deaths at Southern Regional

Glen Lewis

The turnout at a protest against the so-called increase in deaths at the Southern Regional Hospital was anemic; however, the concerns being voiced are very real.  This afternoon, SWU President Glen Lewis and Director of Health Services, Doctor Marvin Manzanero, both spoke on the demonstration.

Glen Lewis, President, Southern Workers Union

“It is of great concern to us, the union, and the community where increasing medical deaths are occurring in our community.  We believe it is negligence of our hospital under the Ministry of Health.  We would like the Ministry of Health and GOB at large, or in particular, to put more interest in health, especially the hospital.  We believe that certain measures need to be put in place so that proper identification of illness can be well asserted to avoid these deaths.  Primarily this demonstration it’s related to the continuing increase of deaths.”

“We did get an initial email from the regional management team stating that there had been a group, I don’t where the group is or what’s the name of the group or what their background is, stating that they had met with management and they had asked for a couple of queries and based on the answers they got they were going to do a protest in front of Southern Regional.  But that’s as far as I know, I don’t know what the real reason is behind the process and I don’t think they had met seriously to discuss any issues, as I am aware, with the management team.”

Glen Lewis

“We believe that health is the concern of everyone and if you as the administrator of the hospital are not concerned about the health of the people you are serving then you must remove yourself from the position.  That is our straightforward thinking.  You don’t need no scientist to come and tell you that.”
