An Update on the Roll Out of Dialysis Programme

Marvin Manzanero

In September, the Deputy Prime Minister Patrick Faber announced that the dialysis programme of the government was being expanded to include twice the number of persons that were receiving treatment. Four medical facilities, including two private institutions, La Loma Luz and the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital have been contracted to provide the services at approximately two million dollars annually, which the government will cover. A number of renal failure patients will essentially get two free dialysis treatments and would have to pay for the third session, if they so choose. Today, Director of Health Services, Doctor Marvin Manzanero told News Five that the roll out has been going as planned.

“The four entities have signed their contracts; that was a couple weeks ago. In the two cases of the private institutions, they have been asked to provide a report on what it is that they are doing with the patients and then I think payment starts at the end of this month, contingent on that report. In terms of Karl Heusner and Loma Luz, there is still a reshuffling of patients because some of them are being transferred closer to wherever they live geographically, so that is a working process. We are meeting with Loma Luz later this week to finalise that process and I believe we meet with Karl Heusner early next week.”

Additional persons were chosen based on specific terms of reference. According to Manzanero a selection committee determined which new patients would benefit from the programme.
