Charleston Cleland is Butchered After Leaving Belize City Nightclub

Charleston Cleland

Just after ten o’clock on Saturday morning, the body of nineteen-year-old Charleston Cleland was found dumped in a swampy area near an embankment off the George Price Highway. Cleland was out on Friday night and was last seen with friends at one of the popular hangout clubs in the city.  When he left the entertainment strip, he was stabbed multiple times, including on his neck. Police are perplexed at the murder of the Wilson Street resident and so far no one has been detained. News Five’s Isani Cayetano reports.

A shocking discovery between miles four and five along the shoulder of the George Price Highway has left investigators stumped.  Someone, during the predawn hours of Saturday morning, disposed of a mutilated corpse just off the roadside.  Visible on the body were multiple stab wounds, including a gash on the left side of the neck.  Nineteen-year-old Charleston Cleland had been mercilessly done away with and dumped at this location.

“Just minutes after ten a.m., police were called out to an area before you reach Bravo Motors, on the left hand side of the road when traveling from Belize City towards the Hattieville area.  Upon arrival in that area, police observed the motionless body of a male person.  The person had what appeared to be a cut wound to the throat, stab wounds to the back and to the chest area.”

Cleland had been out partying with friends the night before.  The last account of him being seen alive was at a local establishment in Belize City, presumably along the entertainment strip, though police would not disclose the name of that nightclub.

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“The information that the police gathered so far is that Cleland was seen socializing on Friday night along with a group of male persons and that was the last time that he was seen alive.”

Reporter

“Have you been able to detain any suspects as yet?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“No, nobody has been detained.”

Reporter

“Sir, in relation to this place where they were socializing, where exactly?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“It was at one of the bars, nightclubs on the north side of the city.”

According to the Crimes Investigation Branch, the Wilson Street resident may have been dispatched at the scene where the body was later found.

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“What the scene was showing is that the murder happened at that area where the body was found.”

Reporter

“Sir, is there anything, perhaps in Mr. Cleland’s past that would maybe be responsible or be able to provide some kind of direction as to what transpired, what happened to Mr. Cleland?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“He is not known to police and we have checked so far and there is nothing that is in our system in regards to him.”

Reporter

“His family indicated anything, perhaps of a personal nature that he may have had?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“We have been communicating with the family and it is just the same information that I have shared a while ago that they have communicated to us.”

Reporter

“The people whom he was with, does the police suspect that they may have had anything to do with it?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Well, we are not sure at this moment but we know that all of them were socializing together and they were the last persons that he was seen with.”

Reporter

“So, has police been able to speak with those persons already?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“We are in the process of looking for them at this moment.”

There are more questions than answers in the preliminary aspect of this case.  While police are reviewing surveillance footage from cameras that may have captured Cleland’s departure with his friends, they are yet to make significant headway in their investigation, particularly since the deceased had no prior run-ins with the law.
