Near Fatal Stabbing in Young Bank Area, Camalote Village

Jose Gonzalez

A Camalote resident in western Belize was stabbed as many as seven times on Saturday night. Jose Gonzalez was at a bar when his attacker pounced on him. His family believes that the stabbing stems from a previous incident in which Gonzalez had intervened. But even as he fights for his life at the hospital with damages to his lung, he is facing another threat.  News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Thirty-five-year-old Jose Gonzalez is tonight clinging to life at the Western Regional Hospital following a near fatal stabbing incident in the Young Bank community of Camalote Village, Cayo. Gonzalez was leaving Rainbow Bar here in the small community when he was stabbed as many as seven times to the body and head by another resident. Rosalinda Morales says that by the time she ran from home to the scene, her brother had already been rushed to the hospital.

“When I gone and check on it, the bar was closed already, nobody on the roads. So the only thing that I know is that the police picked him up and took him to the hospital. He went to buy two beers and then he was returning back home when he stabbed him. He just tell him ha; when my brother turned, that’s when he stabbed him on the back. He get seven stabs in his body.”

Morales says that even as her brother was critically injured, his life has been further threatened by a relative of his attacker, a Guatemalan national Valentino Ramirez, who remains on the lam.

Rosalinda Morales

“He’s a Guatemalan guy; come to Belize and do something and went back because we don’t find his sister or him around because police says if you see him around call police so they can come and pick him up.”

“Any reason as to why someone will want to hurt your brother? Has he said anything about somebody threatening him or that he has any problem with anybody?”

Rosalinda Morales

“Well my brother says one day two of them was fighting, but not my brother. It was between the bralee and the next guy who were fighting. And so my brother say might as well I no will make him die so I will stop them. So that’s the only reason cause my brother separated them from killing one another.”

While the family is unaware of what triggered the violence, police say that a fight transpired at the bar during which Gonzalez was stabbed.

ACP Joseph Myvett, Head, National Crimes Investigation Branch

“Sometime around ten-forty p.m., police were called to a bar in the Young Bank area where they observed a Hispanic male later identified as Jose Gonzalez with multiple stab wounds to the body. The initial investigation reveals that Gonzalez was socializing with one Valentino Ramirez and during that time, they got into an altercation which results in him being stabbed.”

The family is asking for justice as they remain hopeful that Gonzalez will make a full recovery.

Rosalinda Morales

“What we want is that they do with him what the law has to do because we can’t have so many killing in our country because we are so small to the amount of violence going wrong. They kill them and they say nobody know who did it. In this case, we know who is the person that is responsible for what my brother is suffering.”
