A Tribunal to Oversee Concerns of Stevedores and Port Management

In respect of a tribunal to be put together to oversee the concerns of both parties, letters are being sent out to the National Trade Union Congress of Belize, as well as the Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry, to select persons who will form the panel.  The extension, says Doctor Carla Barnett, will also allow for cooler heads to prevail.

“We also are sending off letters as we speak to the Chamber of Commerce and to the National Trade Union Congress to identify representatives who can become a part of the tribunal that is to be set up under the law.”

“The extension effectively kills whatever action would have been taken as of tomorrow, given the initial twenty-one day notice, correct?”

“It may have that impact but we can’t act outside of the law either, so that period of notice has to be in effect for us to establish that tribunal.  And in truth, based on the way the discussions were evolving on the other matters, it seemed to us that it was going in the right direction.  They were talking about important things and making agreements on important things, so for us it was a good meeting that they had yesterday and we expected them to be ready to continue those meetings today.”

The C.W.U. and the Port of Belize return to the negotiating table on October twenty-third.
