Japhet Bennett is Freed of Life Sentence for Murder

Japhet Bennett

Twenty-six-year-old Japhet Bennett was released from the Belize Central Prison on Wednesday afternoon after a life sentence handed down to him at the age of sixteen was quashed by the Caribbean Court of Justice.  Bennett was accused and subsequently convicted of the murder of Ellis ‘Peppa Gacho’ Meighan, who was shot and killed in Belize City in September 2009.  Since then, the matter ascended the rungs of the judicial ladder, making its way to the Caribbean Court of Justice where he was represented by attorneys Audrey Matura and Anthony Sylvester.  After hearing the case brought forth by the appellant, Bennett’s conviction was overturned.  He was released from prison to his mother to a bittersweet reunion.
