A Belize City woman is lucky to be alive tonight after someone attempted to burn down her house while she slept inside on Wednesday night. Twenty-one-year-old Andre Diaz was in deep slumber inside her Consuelo Street house when she heard the sound of sirens. When she exited, Diaz realized that someone had thrown a plastic container filled with kerosene at her house in an attempt to burn it down. Hipolito Novelo reports.

It might seem insignificant to most, but this scorch on the rear wall of a house belonging to twenty- two year old Andre Diaz is a reminder that someone was up to no good on Wednesday night. At around ten o’clock, Diaz was awaken from deep sleep by neighbors and the sound of sirens after which she found out that someone attempted to burn her small wooden house on Consuelo Street down with her inside.

Voice of:  Andre Diaz, Home Owner

“I was inside sleeping, didn’t hear, feel or see anything. When I was sleeping I felt a heaviness. Banging and everything was happening outside my house while they were trying to out the fire. I did not hear anything. I heard the fire engine and that is what made me jump up, thinking that something was wrong with my grandmother. I ran out and saw a lot of police officers outside. When I ran back in I saw the fire start inside so I grabbed the bottle and try save it from the inside. I don’t know why they would want to do this. I don’t have any grudge.”

Police believe it was arson since a container with an accelerant was found at the scene.

At the scene likewise, police were able to locate a transparent container containing suspected accelerant that we suspect was used to lit up the building. At this present moment one person is being detained that is being questioned by the police.”

That suspect is known in the area and for Diaz, she’s entrusting her life in faith and not fear.

Voice of: Andre Diaz

“I feel like a self hero because when I ran out everyone watched me; you were in there when all of this was happening? That is what made me feel proud. I did not feel threatened although that is what is happening. I am just proud of myself.”

Hipolito Novelo

“Do you have any fear that whoever did this might come back and attempt it again?”

Voice of: Andre Diaz

“I do not have any fear. I have faith. When I ran out of my house I knew I was on a mountain and that is what faith does, move mountains.”
