Healthy Living Looks at the Importance of Hand Washing

Everybody does it; or, that’s what we hope. While we know it is important, we’ve all been guilty of skipping it here or there. What’s worse, we may not even be doing it properly and quite likely making ourselves and others sick as a result. What are we talking about? Hand washing. We’ll find out more about its importance in tonight’s Healthy Living.

Marleni Cuellar, Reporting

It’s so easy, a preschooler can do it…

Teacher

“Okay Class lets line up let wash our hands”

Yet every year, October 15 is set aside as Global Hand washing day – an awareness day to remind every one of the importance of this simple practice of good hygiene.

Lonnie Trapp, Public Health Inspector, Ministry of Health

“The hands are very dangerous element in that part of actually facilitating the process of people getting sick.”

Again nothing these preschoolers don’t know…

You see the challenge is not only getting people to consistently wash their hands but to do so properly.

Lonnie Trapp

“A lot of people wash their hands but they miss some of the parts that are very critical. If I had to put a number out there, I would say 30% of people actually know how to wash their hands properly.”

One group of people we rely on the most to have the proper hand washing practices are the people who handle our food from the workers in the top restaurants to the corner tacos stand.

Every year the Ministry of Health revises the World Health Organization’s eleven step hand washing technique with food handlers in addition to other safety practices in order for them to secure their food handlers license.

Dionne Smart, Caterer

“We really need fi do it fi prepare the food. We know we wah ketch ah lee heat and cold but we have to do it cause dat da part ah our job.”

Lonnie Trapp

“It’s one of the five key elements in food preparation and food safety. 80% of the time when you get sick or you get somebody sick the hands does that. People tend to touch very compromising parts of the body. So we have to actually educate them, when you touch your face its very dangerous. You may have sweaty forehead you may want to rub your forehead. You subconsciously do these things. Again you touch yourself well over 200 times a day subconsciously. People touch their face they touch their mucus membranes and a lot of the body part that have a lot of bacteria.”

We only need to recall the yearly spike in stomach bugs, the fast spread of flus and the recent pink eye outbreak and it is clear that we are not practicing proper hygiene. That is why Global Hand Washing Day is celebrated yearly. This year’s theme “Clean Hands – a recipe for health”. A message that thankfully this caterer does take seriously.

Dionne Smart

“It’s a big part of our responsibility at work. First thing in the morning when we get to work we wash our hands before we start prepare the food. All during the while we are preparing the food, we have to wash our hands, prepare the food, go to the next level wash our hands again and prepare the food and prepare the foods again. How many times would you wash your hands? Hmm…countless.”

Investing just a few minutes several times a day can reduce your risk of catching a multitude of diseases – all by washing your hands.
