Kathleen Riviere-Smith

In respect of information and communications technology, there has been a shift toward the use of mobile applications such as Whatsapp and Snapchat.  According to Riviere-Smith, regulators are encouraging teen users to become developers and monetize their use of those platforms.

“Teens are using Whatsapp and Snapchat.  They’ve moved away from Facebook, they say that’s for the parents now, makes me feel old, that they use it more so for fun and not necessarily as much as they could in terms of even actually generating income.  He said, you know, off the record, only one young man said he was posting things on Youtube and earning some income.  How do we then get our people in the region, especially our young people to not just be users, to be creators of content and develop apps and write codes and et cetera.  And so, we want to be in that space where as regulators who are considered leaders in the region to encourage that sort of innovation in our countries.  We also expect to have a session this afternoon on women in utilities regulation because what we find is that women do not always go into traditional utility sectors or utility regulation, so how do we get women more involved and once we get them more involved, how do we keep them and advance them to leadership roles?”
