CWU, Port of Belize Meet on a New C.B.A., but Impasse Continues

A meeting was convened earlier today between the executive of the Christian Workers Union, the Labour Department and the Port of Belize Limited. But soon after it started, it was ended because CWU President Evan “Mose” Hyde had a medical emergency and proceeded to leave the meeting. Tonight, the news is that while the parties have agreed to come back to the table, the impasse continues. The stevedores, through the CWU, have agreed to provide a counterproposal to adjust their working hours in a new collective bargaining agreement.  They have twenty-one days to so do. The Port of Belize has indicated that they are prepared to return to the negotiating table once the counterproposal has been submitted. Minister of State for Labour, Doctor Carla Barnett has also urged the stevedores to come up with a new schedule of working hours.  Both parties are scheduled to return to the negotiating table on October seventeenth, but in the meantime, the Labour Department is said to be preparing for a tribunal.
