Landy Habet says Cayo Northeast Constituents are Uninformed of ICJ Vote
Area Representative Orlando Habet represents Cayo Northeast, which is one of the areas close to the western border with Guatemala. Habet also weighed in on the I.C.J. discussion, speaking on Belize’s independence and territorial integrity, as well as his constituents who are uninformed of the need to vote.
Orlando Habet, Area Representative, Cayo Northeast
“Well certainly as a representative for Cayo Northeast I have to listen to my constituents. My constituents have not been educated on this process and they cannot go to a referendum on something that they are not aware of, they don’t know the details, they are not informed. So the prime minister has said that we should go and make an informed decision and an educated decision but if they are not educated and they are not informed, they cannot make that. But, our party has recently met, we had a party council meeting and this was not tabled so we were not restricted in any way or form and as the honorable mentioned that a formal meeting of the executive, it was decided that we will vote our conscience and looking at this, and we may argue whether it is or it is not, but this may be the single most important issue that Belize is facing and looking at going to the International Court of Justice to put something at risk for something that we have already achieved, our independence and territorial integrity.”
