CEMO Meets to Look at Approaching Weather System

A weather system is looming near Honduras and it is expected that it will become a tropical depression as it passes near Belize over the weekend.  The City Emergency Management Organization, CEMO, headed by Councilor Michael Noralez, met this afternoon with officials from the National Emergency Management Organization.  Out of that meeting which followed an advisory at three o’clock, came a decision to continue monitoring the system, as well as to assess the state of readiness for Emergency Operations Centers in certain areas of the country.

“We had a meeting today, a joint meeting between the City Emergency Management Organization and NEMO, the National Emergency Management Organization, hence the presence of Mr. Al Westby.  We had gotten an advisory on Invest 91L that is somewhere between Honduras and Belize and it should make itself [upward] passing just north of Belize City.  We got to understand that it will be a rainmaker, so our job this afternoon was to make sure that we give the proper advisory, especially to those who live in flood prone areas in the north and in the Belize District as well.”

“We have summoned every district to convene a meeting.  The reason for the meeting is to be proactive.  So, what we did was we asked them for a start state readiness for each EOC.  In other words, they will tell us what they have if they need anything, the strengths of the EOC and then we could work on whatever they send to us in supplying or anything like that, and it goes from food line to fuel, to any human resources comps, to public officers, bodies anything, heavy equipment.  As you know, in Belize City is quite equipped with a lot of equipment and it’s a plus for us as I was here for the meeting earlier.  They can respond quite readily and quickly with what they have, with the assistance of the government side it can only be great.”
