Tea Party at HelpAge

The Help Age Belize District Branch held its annual Tea Party for over one hundred and fifty seniors today in Belize City. This week the organization is observing older persons week and culminated with the tea party. The elderly ladies and gentlemen were fitted in their Sunday best and sipping tea when we stopped by. The event is a fundraiser to do more activities for the elderly in the Belize District. New Chair of the Board, Carmen Barrow tells us why events like the tea party are important to their mission:

“For us it is important to deal with the issue of what happens to you as you get older. All of us, including yourself, you will get to this stage at some point in your life. I think it is important for us to have some sort of structure, some sort of system in place that says not because I am sixty or sixty-five or eighty-five that means my life is over. But you have made your contributions in the work environment, in the home environment, but there is so much more knowledge, experience, expertise that you have that you can share. So, for me, the challenge for me as the chair for the Belize City branch is to get as many seniors as possible in helping to develop Belize as a country.”

Phyllis Kelly, Tea Party Participant

“We have been looking forward to this tea party from weeks ago. We sold tickets and we all got ready. So, yes, we are excited about it and the hats especially. We are going to have a little parade of the hats and they will judge hats, so that is why we came all dressed up.”

Andrea Polanco

“So you like tea parties? What do you like about it?”

Phyllis Kelly

“Oh yes! I love tea parties. I enjoy the chatter and the tea and the food and all the enjoyment we get from meeting each other and greeting each other and things like that.”

“The District Branch serves approximately one hundred and fifty persons within the community and we have thirty-eight persons within the Sister Cecilia home. So, we cater to almost one hundred and fifty persons because on occasions we have the members from the Ladyville older persons group who would come in and join us from time to time.”
