Notice of Strike Still in Effect by CWU & Stevedores

Despite an intervention by Labor Minister Dr. Carla Barnett, a notice of strike by stevedores at Port of Belize is still in effect. That’s the message from the president of the Christian Workers Union tonight, after several meetings with the government representative. Since the impasse between the Port and the CWU, several meetings have been held with Barnett, her C.E.O. and the acting Labor Commissioner. Today, after a series of meetings with both parties, CWU President Evan ‘Mose’ Hyde briefed the media. Hyde says that essentially, the proposal by the Port is that the stevedores should accept a cut of almost twenty-five percent on its income; this is even after having compromised with losing a gang member. The stevedores claim that the proposal threatens their economic stability.

“After meeting with both sides, she came to us this morning, advancing ways forward for us to see if we can work this out. And what I can say now because we cannot get into a lot of details, I will say that we are still on our twenty-one day plan; we have not taken it off. Being a responsible negotiating team and a union, we are participating fully with the intervention coming from the Ministry of Labor. The Ministry of Labor has gone to tell us that they have asked the solicitor general to give a legal opinion on the matter of the hours of work proposal. As you know the Port of Belize is looking at a particular labor law as it speaks to the need for rest and is using it to say that they cannot continue with the way that stevedores have made their money time in memorial. So they have presented their legal opinion to the Minister of Labor, the Minister of Labor has indicated that she has asked the Solicitor General to form a legal opinion for them. And she has indicated that she expects that to be given to her at some point early next week. Similarly, we are tasked with having a legal opinion of our own so you can say that the matter of the hours of work is something that has been placed to some extent in the refrigerator until we can come together again on it when the ministry has its position.”
