The “Mess” at Vital Stats to be Cleaned Out

The Vital Statistics Unit is a ‘mess’ according to Church Senator Ashley Rocke and U.D.P. Senator Macario Coy. The issue of the unit’s inefficiency was debated on Wednesday during the Senate Sitting after an amendment to the Registration of Births and Deaths Act was brought for second reading. In August, News Five visited the Vital Statistic Unit at the corner of Hyde’s Lane and New Road in Belize City and from what we observed people were frustrated at the slow-moving lines and the inefficient services being offered. The amendment is to fix that issue, the law of human resources and as well the infrastructure challenges that the unit faces.

“In the re-registration exercise many of the representatives in the People’s United Party complained that getting documents out of the Vital Stats Department was a nightmare and continue to be a nightmare. Now they are trying to clean it up but we know how politics is in Belize. Maybe not you but what if Cabinet is reshuffled and you are not the Attorney General anymore and the next Attorney General comes in and says ‘Mr. Sol. Gen. deal with these papers now, do not deal with these ones now.’ We have a serious issue there.”

“I have gone down to this area where you have to deal with birth certificates and those things and I can tell you that is a mess. I say that if something is not done quickly about that place on the corner of New Road and Hyde’s Lane we will have some serious problem there. I went there one time and people were actually getting physical and wanting to name each other and wanting to fight each other.”

“But it has been in a mess. This particularly applies to us in the Toledo District. Years after years our people go to the registration, they register for a birth certificate. In fact if you register for a birth certificate in Punta Gorda Town it might take you four, five months to get it back. When you get it back, just to realize that if your name spell as Coy as mines you might have it spelled backwards. It is reality. Or they even change some surnames.”

“Mr. President we are also very aware of the physical condition for example of Vital Stats. That is why we are moving. We have outgrown the building and we have found a more suitable place so that we can accommodate more people and hopefully divide the work. There is also a suggestion to say listen, you make your applications in the morning and you come for it in the afternoon. We have to find a way to restructure. Now, where we will get the ideas from? Count yourselves. If any of in here have an idea as to how to improve the system, tell me I am your colleague. Tell me.”
