PC Patten Discharges Firearm Outside of Sugar City Night Club

A police officer is under investigation tonight for discharging a firearm outside of a nightclub in Orange Walk Town.  Michael Patten was captured on video letting loose his service weapon as he exited an establishment on Guadalupe Street.  It is reported that he was coming to the aid of a patron who had been injured during an altercation inside the premises moments earlier and that he feared being attacked by the persons who assaulted the clubgoer.  Notwithstanding that explanation, the incident is still being investigated and it is expected that Patten will be dealt with internally by the Belize Police Department.

“The police did receive a video that was circulating, whereupon one PC Michael Patten who is attached to the Special Patrol Unit in Belmopan.  According to him, he was socializing with others at a nightclub in Orange Walk on Guadalupe Street.  Sometime during the course of that night there was an altercation within the club by persons known to police.  As a result, one of those persons was beaten up and suffered some facial injuries.  According to PC Patten, when he was escorting that person to his vehicle in order to transport that person to the hospital, as a result of those that were around and he feared that he would have been attacked by the crowd, he pulled out his service issued nine millimeter pistol and fired several rounds.  An investigation has since been conducted into this matter.  This officer was brought in as part of the investigation and the weapon is withheld.  So at this point in time there is a certainty that he will be dealt with disciplinary.  I do not know at this point in time where the investigation will lead otherwise, but indeed there is an ongoing investigation into this matter.”
