UNCAC Report Completed, But Minor Corrections to be Made

A team of experts from Tuvalu and Haiti came to conduct an assessment of the country in July as part of Belize’s implementation of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption. Since then we have not heard much about UNCAC and the progress if any, that the Attorney General’s office has made. During Wednesday’s Sitting of the Senate, N.G.O. Senator Osmany Salas questioned whether the implementation of UNCAC has stalled to which Attorney General provided an update with regards to the report compiled by the reps of Haiti and Tuvalu.

“I need to mention that among some newer responsibilities that it has been assigned to it over the last year or two is that it serves as the focal point for UNCAC, the UN Convention against Convention. I need to mention briefly here; it seems that the process has stalled, has slowed down. There is a lot of work to do along the lines of supporting the implementation of that convention.”

“They have just given to me the analysis that Haiti and Tuvalu have done, kind of an executive summary of what their position is. But the way it works is that they hand us the document and we see if we can make any corrections that are minimal that have nothing to do with the body of the document itself. For example, they refer to Belize as a Commonwealth monarchy which we are not. So we have to tidy up those little errors and once we agree on the tidiness of it then we will release if for the public.”

Belize signed on to the UNCAC, on December ninth, 2016, becoming the hundred and eighty-fourth signatory to that agreement.
