Economic Partnership Agreement Brings Local Producers and Service Providers Together

Leroy Almendarez

A workshop hosted by the CARIFORUM-European Union Economic Partnership Agreement on business to business strategic networking was held today at the Biltmore.  The seminar brought together local producers, as well as service providers to learn about the importance of international market standards for goods and services.

Dr. Leroy Almendarez, Executive Director, BELTRAIDE

“The major scope or objective of today’s workshop is to sensitize people who are producers of goods or services with respect to what are those things that we need to understand.  What are those measures and procedures that we must comply with because we are talking about exporting of goods or services.  Remember, it is the receiving market which is the importing market that determines what are those procedures that we must meet.  And so, the presenter from the EU, the European Union, is presenting to us, and we are talking here really, this is the CARIFORUM/EPA workshop and the CARIFORUM goes beyond just CARICOM, it includes the Dominican Republic.  The Economic Partnership Agreement came about, I think, you know, sometime around 2008, Belize signed on in 2011 and so therefore, it means then that we can in fact penetrate the European market with our goods and services but selling the idea to the private sector because BELTRAIDE sensitizes, the Directorate General of Foreign Trade sensitizes, but it’s up to those who are being sensitized to make that determination.”
