Duo Charged for Maya Center Robbery; 2 Others Sought

Joseph Myvett

A Belize City man and another from Dangriga have been charged in connection with a robbery on Tuesday night in Maya Center Village in Stann Creek. Just before eight-thirty p.m., police were alerted of a robbery in progress at a Chinese store belonging to Jinhong Zhuang. The thirty-one-year-old store owner said that four men, two of them with guns, entered the store and demanded money, which he handed over in fear of his life. He was relieved of two thousand, four hundred dollars in cash and three cell phones valued at two thousand dollars. But ACP Joseph Myvett says that quick response from the police led to the arrest of Akeem Augustine and Clinton Gordon in the Maya Beach area; they were subsequently charged for the robbery in Maya Center. Myvett explains how police were able to nab the suspects.

“Police responding to the area observed a white Ford escort car with Belize license plate and in an attempt to intercept the car, the driver sped off and the vehicle was later encountered by police on the Placencia Road; however, the occupants had made good their escape. So that vehicle is now in police custody. Further police investigation reveal that Maya Beach Police, responding to information, boarded a passenger bus that was headed towards Seine Bight Village where upon entering the bus, two male persons exited the bus through the back and attempted to make good their escape. Police pursued those persons and caught up with them and one of them was identified to be Akeem Augustine of a Belize City address who at the time had in his possession of a nine millimetre pistol loaded with nine rounds of ammunition. He was arrested and charged for possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition. He was then taken for further investigation where himself along with Clinton Gordon, thirty-years-old of a Dangriga address have since been arrested and charged frot he crime of robbery.”

Two others are being sought by police.
