Belize City Mayor Takes on N.T.U.C.B. President

Belize City Mayor Bernard Wagner had some strong words for National Trade Union Congress of Belize President, Floyd Neal. On Wednesday, during the P.U.P.’s annual wreath-laying ceremony for George Price, News Five caught up with the Mayor and asked him about the N.T.U.C.B. statement claiming that the Mayor was union busting.  The issue stems from complaints voiced by members of the cemetery staff who are also members of the C.W.U.  Wagner questioned Neal’s intentions.

“Mr. Floyd Neal needs to stop play politics. We have already addressed all the concerns of the union. I believe that at some point in time you have to begin to behave professionally. How can you send the mayor a very derogative letter? At the same time, I have not received that letter as yet but you would leak the letter out to the media? Is that professional or is there a hidden agenda? That is what peeves me with this guy, Floyd Neal. I am hoping that at some point in time myself and the president of the Christian Workers Union can get together so that we can work out this matter because I do not plan on having this back and forth with the Christian Workers Union ongoing. We have a lot of work to do. Our council is focused on the work to do. We have addressed the needs of our workers. Our workers went to the mile thirteen facility yesterday. They received their funds in hand. They went up in a different transportation. That is one of the issues they had. We have addressed those issues. So why continue harping on this matter, unless there is something deeper.”

Hipolito Novelo

“The N.T.U.C.B. is a very powerful union. It is the umbrella union for many of the smaller unions. What do you make of that specific sentence? Some may call it a promise. Some may call it a warning and others may call it a threat meaning that if it continues, the Union Busting, as they say, the N.T.U.C.B. will be forced to intervene.”

Bernard Wagner

“But there is no dispute so how can they intervene? There is no dispute. There are a lot of more other things that the N.T.U.C.B. should be addressing. They represent the stevedores. They represent Belize Water Services. They represent B.T.L.  I have not heard them harping about them.”

Hipolito Novelo

“They feel as though the city council disrespected the CWU.”

Bernard Wagner

“We never disrespected the CWU. I am not about disrespecting anyone. I am about humility. I am humble. Now with the disrespect, you should read that letter and find out what disrespect is all about.”
