Opposition Leader: We Need a Sarstoon Protocol

John Briceño

Leader of the Opposition John Briceño reacted to Government’s protest note against Guatemala’s armed forces which aggressed members of the BTV and civilians on the northern channel of the river as the kayak eco challenge headed to the Sarstoon Island.  The GAF was on three vessels carrying seventeen soldiers and a gunboat was docked in the distance. Reacting to the incident, Briceño told the press that G.O.B.’s protest note came too late. Briceño believes that the Barrow Administration must ramp up pressure against its neighbour and duly inform the international community of Guatemala’s illegal behavior against Belize.

John Briceño, Leader of the Opposition

“It took a long time to give a protest note. We are very disappointed and we have been calling on the government for a very long time that we need to have a Sarstoon Protocol. When we were actively involved in the work along with Guatemala, we were pushing for us to sign a protocol. We prepared a first of that protocol but it seems like it is not going anywhere. I think as a government we can do more. I think we can put more pressure on Guatemala and to make sure that maybe we need to spread this out beyond Guatemala and Belize, making sure that all the friends of Belize and all the countries in the United Nations to be aware of the illegal behavior of Guatemala, trying to take a portion of the Sarstoon River that they know and we know rightfully belongs to Belize. As I have said many times over and over, the position of the People’s United Party is that we are not going to give a single inch of Belizean territory to Guatemala.”
