Have Known Gang Members Evaded Emergency Zones?

Audrey Matura

There have been several reports made of law-abiding persons being caught in the dragnet in respect of the state of public emergency. There is mounting concern over the abuse of power.  Attorney Audrey Matura also questions why known gang affiliates from within the emergency zones have not been picked up even though their whereabouts are known to the police.

Audrey Matura, Attorney

“If you’ve been caught in a area that is not the emergency zone, but they believe that you are from that area, they can pick you up and lock you up and apply the same rules. That’s’ extending beyond what the constitution allowed. So my position, if that came about the seventh, anybody picked up by the fourth, before it came into law cannot be applied because you cannot make it retroactive. And people have been picked up under that provision that do not live in that area and that needs to be questioned.  We’ve gotten reports and I will not call names because I want to confirm. But there are three known guys who are always making the news with shootings and gang related activities and drug trafficking and they either always get off or on bail. Well, they are known to be in one of the emergency zone areas, but they’ve got free passage to one of the districts where they are hiding out and the evidence that is coming to us is that a high ranking officer who is involved with the state of emergency is having a sexual relationship with a relative of theirs. That is how far it is going and people on the street will either make up things or they will have proof. Now, we’ve been able to track down and know that they are in a certain district and indeed I have known the persons through the news and I am wondering how come certain people are getting special favours when people, there are at least two cases I know where the address of the two young men are not in those areas; they don’t even live in those areas, but yet the police have brought them in claiming that we could. No you can’t.”
