6.8 Million Euros for Strengthening of Health Sector

A grant agreement between the European Union, the Pan American Health Organization and the World Health Organization for roughly seven million Euros has been signed for a period of four years.  As part of the Eleventh European Development Fund cooperation agreement, Belize and the EU have identified the health sector as one of the areas for working together for the period 2014 to 2020.  The two areas of focus include the development of efficient and effective disaster resilient and environmentally friendly health facilities and the strengthening of structure, organization and management of health services.  In the Caribbean and Central America, health facilities are vulnerable to natural hazards, as well as the effects of climate change.

“The vulnerability of this country and this region to natural disasters, to climate change is enormous and it is unacceptable that the changing climate, the changing weather conditions should deprive people from this basic right and that is access to medical assistance.  Of course we live in the age of huge impact of climate change, denied by some, but we see every day in this country and in this region the enormous impact of climate change.  The hurricanes will not go away, they will hit every year and they will affect the countries and the people of this region in ways that we cannot imagine.  Therefore energy efficiency and more environmental practice in our daily lives in the management of institutions and facilities is essential.  So we are thrilled, and as I said, this is the second biggest sector.  We’ve been partnering with the Government of Belize for many years and our assistance exceeds a hundred million Euros.  Many of the sectors are finishing, assistance to sectors of sugar and banana industry are about to finish.  This is one of the three key areas for this current financial cycle but before the year is over.”
