CitCo Versus Haylock Bus Limited Back in Court

Anthony Sylvester

A scheduled hearing of a suit brought against the Belize City Council and others by Haylock Bus Limited was further adjourned today to October tenth when all parties are to return to court for the matter to be heard before Supreme Court Judge Shona Griffith.  The bus company is claiming that the council acted unlawfully when it granted permission to another bus company, to operate a similar route given to them. The permit is for the transportation of commuters from the Pound Yard Bridge to Belama in Belize City.  That authority to issue permits, according to the claimant, is solely the responsibility of the Transport Board, which has now been included in the lawsuit at the instructions of Justice Griffith. Representing the Belize City Council in this case is attorney Anthony Sylvester, who explains why it was adjourned yet again.

Anthony Sylvester, Attorney for Belize City Council

“They issued a letter consenting to City Bus Limited to be able to conduct runs on a similar bus route that they are operating. There were preliminary issues that were raised previously. The matter first came up in July and it was adjourned to allow them to amend their claim. The matter came back on this morning and it was further adjourned to the tenth of October to give the applicant some more time to do some more amendments if necessary.”

Duane Moody

“This was in an effort to not have the case dragged out?”

Anthony Sylvester

“Yes, yes, yes because as the court explained to the parties, in matters of public interest it’s been to have a frontal deliberation of the matters and so it allowed the parties time to be able to remedy whatever defect or shortcomings there may be in the applications and so that is what took place this morning. And on the tenth of October the matter resumes and hopefully at that time, everything will come to a head and there may be a final determination of the matter.”
