Every year around the world, telecommunication companies celebrate World Telecom Day in their own way. Every year the Belize Telecommunications Limited invites students and the general public to view their line of products and learn about advancements being made in communication technology. In Belize, B.T.L. showcased the company’s latest products and new information technology.

Suzette Tillett, Public Relations Manager, BTL

“Today we have on display our latest digital equipment. B.T.L. is going GSM, so we have GSM on display. We’re going to launch pre-paid Internet, so we have that also on display. We recently had the new caller name and ID, we also have that for people to try and use. We have the Internet, so people can surf and find out more about our web page.”

And while there were no specials being offered, a lot of information was available to the public. However, far more primary school students than B.T.L. customers were at the fair. Public relations manager, Suzette Tillett says the company is encouraged by the marked increased in the number of schools that attend the open day, because the event is also a part of B.T.L.’s Stay in School campaign.

“The Stay in School campaign is a year long campaign that incorporates a lot of activities. We have our scholarship programme, we have our Internet to schools programme, we’ve sponsored the Stay in School Jam, all those activities incorporated in what we call the Stay in School.”

The boys and girls received small gifts like exercise books before they made their way back to school. Jacqueline Woods Reporting for News 5.

The open day was observed under the theme “Information and Communication Technology for all: Empowering people to cross the Digital Divide.”
