The K.H.M.H. at 23!

The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital turned twenty-three on Saturday. The authority at the national referral hospital, which has endured good and bad times, held a brief ceremony to acknowledge the milestone. Over two months ago, Michelle Cox-Hoare was named as the new Chief Executive Officer to replace Doctor Adrian Coye, who resigned from the position.  Cox-Hoare and K.H.M.H. staff gathered in the lobby to commemorate the institution’s anniversary. News Five’s Andrea Polanco reports.

The Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital is celebrating its twenty-third anniversary. On September fifteenth 1995, the national referral hospital opened its doors to the public as the new Belize City Hospital. It was renamed as the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital and in 2003 it became the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital Authority. C.E.O. Michelle Hoare says that the national hospital has come a long way since 1995.

“September fifteenth 1995, the then new Belize City Hospital had a total of one hundred and nine beds and a staff complement of three hundred and fifty one. Today, twenty-three years later, we now have one hundred and eighty-nine beds, including one hundred and forty-nine in-patient beds and forty transient beds.”

And since its inception, the hospital continues to see a growing number of illnesses and as C.E.O. Cox-Hoare points out, these demands keep the hospital’s occupancy rate at ninety-percent.

“K.H.M.H. continues to be challenged with new and emerging diseases and complications associated with chronic non-communicable diseases, such as diabetes, cardiac diseases, hypertension, cancers. Coupled with an aging work-force and an improperly defined retention strategy, the organizations continues  work with occupancy rates upwards of ninety-percent, primarily in our general, medical and surgical in-patient areas. In our accident and emergency department, which is the department most impacted and as the unit that has to respond to inadequate bed spaces to these general in-patient areas.”

As the national referral hospital, the K.H.M.H. offers a wide cross-section of health care offerings, from adult to neo-natal and pediatric intensive care services to ear, nose and throat specialty, gastroenterology, cardiology, and most recently cardio-thoracic services.  Equipped with a new vision in 2017, C.E.O. Cox-Hoare says that K.H.M.H. will continue to establish itself as the national leader in quality and affordable health care.

Michelle Cox-Hoare

“The strategic objective for the next five years aims at results based management and focused on a sustained drive to increase efficiencies and sustain costs. So, what is our new vision? We believe that we will be, the national leader in the provision of the highest quality and affordable services.   What will drive this vision? We believe the set of core values we defined for the very first time, that being confidentiality, in patient care, loyalty to the institution, ethical patient care delivery, accountability in all we do, respectful working interactions and strengthening team work.”
