N.T.U.C.B. Calls Out CitCo for ‘Union Busting’

The National Trade Union Congress of Belize is calling out the Belize City Council for Union Busting. The umbrella union wrote to Mayor Bernard Wagner warning that it will not stand by and allow one of its Affiliates to suffer such actions by any entity. That affiliate is the Christian Workers Union. As we reported last week, the C.W.U.’s General Secretary Floyd Neal, who is also the president of the N.T.U.C.B., was not allowed to be part of two staff meetings which were called after members, who are part of the cemetery staff, voiced concerns over the payment of subsistence. For the first meeting, the CWU was told that it had to request participation, but after they did, an hour before the second meeting the council informed the CWU that its request was denied.   The N.T.U.C.B. tells Mayor Wagner to cease or desist forthwith.  The union also warns that if these actions continue, then the Congress will have no other option than to intervene on behalf of its affiliate.  Of the thirteen cemetery staff employees, twelve are members of the CWU. According to Mayor Wagner, none of the union members requested representation in any of the meetings. The issue of subsistence payment has been resolved.
