Anke Doehm Wants to Travel to the U.S. to Visit Doctors

Anke Doehm returned to court today seeking a variation to her bail conditions so that she can travel to the U.S. to visit with her doctors. But even as that application was brought before the courts, Doehm was faced with being remanded after the person who had initially posted bail for her withdrew his recognizance. That placed her in a pickle, but luckily she was able to secure another bond and was free to leave the court. Doehm is the mother of Faye Lin Canon, the thirteen-year-old girl who was killed in San Pedro in July of 2017.  Attorney Dickie Bradley represented Doehm on behalf of his colleague Ellis Arnold and Jacqueline Willoughby appeared on behalf of the D.P.P. Office.

“The application before the court was a variation of bail and I came prepared to argue that matter and I was informed by the recognizance that he was prepared to remove his recognizance from the petitioner. I had to raise this matter with the court. His affidavit does not form a part of my bundle and so when it was brought to my attention, I brought it to the attention of the court, who had to make a ruling on it. And that ruling has been made and she now has to find somebody else to perfect a bail for her until the twenty-eight then we resume argument for the issues of the variation.”

“She is asking for a minor variation which is not unusual, which is something that has always happened with persons on bail—whether they are Belizeans or foreigners. And she is just asking for a variation of the term that says that she must report regularly to the police station so that she can go to see her doctors abroad and come back to the court. Everybody do it all the time. But this morning when she came in front of the learned Judge Cumberbatch, the Crown Counsel told the judge that she has just received a paper and had handed it up without reading it; I think I asked her to speak to you rather than me speaking to you all so she may have given her side of the statement. Attorneys have a professional duty to each other; if she had known ahead of time that there was an application by the person who did bail for Misses Doehm, she had a duty to inform us.  He allowed the opportunity for the other person to come and sign the bail and so it moves from a transition of one to the other which is what occurred so that Miss Doehm didn’t have to be rushed to the prison.”

Doehm is to return to court on September twenty-eighth where the application for her to travel will be determined. David Doehm, Anke’s husband committed suicide inside a room at the Princess Hotel last year.
