Bar Association Raises Concerns Over State of Public Emergency

There is growing concern within the legal fraternity regarding the recent declaration of a state of public emergency in the George Street and Mayflower Street communities.  The Bar Association of Belize this afternoon issued a release essentially reiterating the position that the Human Rights Commission of Belize has taken, in respect of the new measure which has seen as many as one hundred and ten persons being taken into custody.  The Bar says that any action taken to address the ever-increasing crime situation should not result in the abuse of human rights.  The release also cites the manner in which the Belize Police Department has been carrying out the new measure and says it is vigilantly monitoring this situation and its membership is committed to taking whatever steps are necessary to ensure that the constitutionally guaranteed rights of all citizens are respected and upheld.  Senior Counsel Cheryl-Lyn Vidal who is also the Director of Public Prosecutions is the president of the Bar.
