Attorneys Prepare to Represent Persons Illegally Detained

As we have reported, over a hundred persons were detained since the morning of September fifth, including adults and minors following the signing of the proclamation by the Governor General on September fourth. According to Bradley, he along with several other attorneys, is reviewing the law and is prepared to represent persons who have been unlawfully detained.

Dickie Bradley

Dickie Bradley, Attorney-at-law

“The constitution of Belize guarantees to everyone, including all those persons who have been wrongly, falsely, illegally and unconstitutional detained that they can apply to the Supreme Court of Belize for a writ of habeas corpus; another two words that come from Latin. A lot of our laws through the British and they get them from the Romans. Habeas Corpus is an application asking the court to order that they bring the person to the court and justify why they are holding them. That is open to all those persons right now. There’s a lot of unconstitutional things that are going on, which I don’t want to say because my colleagues are in fact researching and looking at cases in other jurisdictions so that they can have a package prepared for whoever wishes to go and pawn out something and pay them the small fee that they will charge to send a signal to the system that if you want to do something, do it the correct way. Listen, let me repeat myself. The authorities think that they can go and round up those young men, some of whom are bad people and the rest are not bad people and they themselves are admitting that; and they have let go some persons. I have a list of people who their families have come to me and last night I got calls and met with some of them. They have been release. That right away is saying to you they were wrong in going to pick them up. Yo can’t do that.  On one had the government has lost control of the situation and this is a knee-jerk reaction. If you tell me as you are telling me that this so-called state of emergency, this bogus state of emergency which is going to send shockwaves to our citizens in America and elsewhere. There are terrible repercussions in regards to what they have just done you know, because of a handful of people. You wah tell me the government can’t find the resources to deal with a handful of people pahn Banak Street and ina Mayflower? Come on man; this whole thing is ridiculous.”
