The Carr Sisters Need Your Help

Track and field athletes Ashantie and Ashontie Carr have been accepted into the University of Technology in Jamaica to pursue higher studies for three years.  There, they will earn their degrees, but also train and develop in their sport.  While the girls have secured tuition and flights, they are yet to finalize their accommodations. They need around two thousand five hundred Belize dollars each for housing per year. They are slated to leave on Thursday and are now asking for the public’s help to secure a place to live while they pursue studies in Jamaica. Today we spoke with the athletes and the President of the Athletic Association.

“I feel very overwhelmed and happy for the opportunity because we will not only be studying across there but we will also be representing Belize in track and field and studying and improving our abilities more, yeah. We definitely need help in the different parts of the payment in the accommodation. We are just asking for some assistance in that part. And the cost is basically two thousand five hundred per person.”

“Because it is a well-known school for track and field and I believe that it can develop our skills.”

“It’s kinda late notice in terms of their acceptance and payments. However, we are grateful to the Minister of Education. He has agreed to pay the tuition for these ladies to attend UTECH. So, upon hearing that the BAA was grateful for that and we also wanted to do our part because we don’t owe these girls anything but they deserve what they are getting. And so we jumped at it and said that we are gonna provide the means of transportation for them to get to Jamaica and so the executive agreed that we are gonna purchase their flight. On hearing the cost of the accommodation, it is something that at this time we cannot afford. We believe they deserve it and so we are hoping that the general public can come out and assist these girls because we don’t want them to get to Jamaica and then they have no where to stay. The cost is two-thousand five hundred for the year which they can pay for by semesters and there are two semesters. So, if they get half of that in terms of both of them they will be able to go and be more relaxed in terms of their preparation. As you know they have already missed, this is the second week of school and so they are way behind. So, we really want the assistance for them to catch up. I know that they are very intelligent ladies and so we would really like the public to assist.”

If you’d like to assist the Carr sisters, you can contact the BAA President at 607-1102 or the girls’ mother at 661-9017.
