Another Murder: Francis Pollard Gunned Down on Doris Brooks Crescent

Francis Pollard

Less than six hours after Shakedi Baizar was gunned down, a retaliatory murder occurred on Arlington Drive. Twenty-three-year-old Francis Pollard was shot several times while on Doris Books Crescent, a few minutes away from his house. Investigators confirmed today that the murder is gang-related. News Five’s Hipolito Novelo reports.

Shots several times, twenty three year old Belize City resident Francis Pollard died while receiving treatment at the K.H.M.H. He was shot several times at around seven forty five p.m. on Friday night. Pollard was entering a residence on Doris Brooks Crescent when a gunman crept up on him and fired several shots in his direction.

“I saw him about seven thirty and I told Francis, where are you going? He said that he was going to get something. He went and bought the bread and he bought fry chicken. He said he was in a hurry right now. I told him careful. He said he will be careful. I saw him he will take the walk.”

A few minutes later, Joan Janet Burgess, Grandmother of Francis Pollard received the unfortunate news of her grandson’s murder.

Joan Janet Burgess

“Look here, I was so confused. I ran to that door then I ran to that door. It could not be “Tito’. I ran to the verandah and asked if they heard what happened. They said yes Ms. B, they just shot ‘Tito’. I said I just left him at seven thirty. I asked what he did for him to be shot like that. Nobody answered me. I told to tell me what happened. Nobody answered and said anything.”

Today, investigators shared some answers. Head of Belize City CIB, A.S.P. Alejandro Cowo says that Pollard’s murder is retaliation for the murder of twenty-three-year-old Shakedi Baizar who was fatally shot as he exited the Matron Roberts Clinic hours before.

“What we suspect and we believe is that it was a consequence of the first murder that happened during the Friday evening.”

“However were they just trying to target anyone from the Arlington Area or was it specific to this young man?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“I think it would be anybody. It does not have to be somebody specific but anybody who they had the opportunity to shoot.”

“From that Arlington Area?”

Burgess believes her grandson was killed because he associated with the wrong people.

Joan Janet Burgess

“Everybody loved him. He was not anybody who was violent or with gang but he hangs with the crowd. So I always told him to try to keep away from those people. He said he would listen to me. I was so hard when I saw him on that bed. I said but my baby wasn’t anyone who gave trouble like that. I cried. Every minute I cried.”

As a result of the spate of weekend murders, police presence will be strengthened in the area.

Joan Janet Burgess

“I always hear people talking about gun violence but here I am and it is very sad for parents. I am telling you it is not something easy. It is hard.”

“We need some development in security especially policing the area and we need a police booth. That’s all we need because right now crime is escalating after hours. In the night, especially three o’clock you still have Arlington Drive busy at night. We do not know what the problem is.”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“There is a vehicle assigned to that entire area there. It is a large area however the vehicle patrols each and every street and alley in that area that they are responsible for. We have foot patrol there likewise but we have to be very cognizant that the man power, we see where it is needed it is where police officers are placed. Yes we have seen that in that area there is an increased of shooting incidents and the police is looking at that. Probably they will be putting more police officers in that area there to try to calm down what is happening at this moment.”
