Independence Umpire Strangled to Death Inside Room at Belize City Guesthouse

Allin Anthony Purtillo

Three murders on Friday and another three on Saturday. On Saturday morning, a guesthouse housekeeper found forty-year-old Allin Anthony Purtillo dead, covered by the hotel linen with his feet and hands bound with phone cord. Purtillo  travelled from Independence to Belize City last Friday to officiate a softball game and checked into the Bayview Guesthouse on Baymen Avenue at about twelve forty-five p.m.  It was not his first time at the hotel and staff would seem him with two guests.  Police have been reviewing surveillance footage which captured two men arriving at the guesthouse as part of the investigations. News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

On Saturday afternoon, a gruesome discovery was made at Bayview Guesthouse on Baymen Avenue in Belize City. Inside room number four, the body of Independence resident, forty-year-old Allin Anthony Purtillo was discovered in a face up position; his hands were bound with a phone charger, his feet tied with a shoelace and he was covered from head to toe in a white sheet on the bed. The body was discovered by the housekeeper after eleven on Saturday morning.

Voice of: Noelia Larios, Housekeeper, Bayview Guesthouse

“The guy checked in about twelve-thirty Friday. And then he went upstairs by himself and then later we see him about nine-thirty, he came in back by himself again. That’s all I saw because I don’t work Saturdays or Sundays; Saturday dah when the next lady weh work find him.  She went in, knocked on his door eleven and he didn’t open so when we usually wait a lee while and then after that we get the key and open it.”

Duane Moody

“Did she explain to you what she saw when she reached?”

Voice of: Noelia Larios

“Well, he was just covered from head to toe with the sheet so you couldn’t see nothing. From there they called the police.”

Surveillance cameras at the guesthouse, show two men exiting a car before entering the compound and going up to the second floor of the building; they are believed to be acquaintances of Purtillo because he was last seen alive socializing with two men on the back veranda of the building.

Voice of: Noelia Larios

“The camera shows that two guys went up, but we noh sure if dah to him yes.”

Duane Moody

“Did anybody see him socializing with anybody else?”

Voice of: Noelia Larios

“Yes, yes, the next guy weh work in the night saw him on the back veranda with two other guys.  I’ve worked here for eleven years and nothing has happened. So it has to be someone that knew him and he invited them over, because otherwise, nothing like this ever happen.”

According to Noelia Larios, Purtillo was a regular at the guesthouse and would often times have persons visiting at night. A tenant claims that around 12:30 a.m., she heard a scream, but thought nothing of it. News Five has confirmed that surveillance footage captured the same men walking on Ninth Street before getting into the waiting car across the street on Baymen Avenue before driving off.  The camera footage does not show them exiting the compound through the front gate. There were no signs of violence on the body, but a post-mortem conducted earlier today determined that Purtillo was manually strangled to death.

“Inside of the room was kinda ransacked, however we could not determine if anything was stolen from inside the room. There is no forced entry into the room.”

Isani Cayetano

“Could this have been a sexual tryst gone wrong?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“We are not sure about that.”

“Sir, can you say if any signs of violence were noted on the body?”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“No signs of violence. The post-mortem was conducted a while ago; the cause of death was manual strangulation.”
