Orson Stephens is Murdered at Port Loyola Preschool

Orson Stephens

While processing the Pelican Street murder, fifteen minutes later, a school security guard was shot and killed while on duty. Orson Stephens was inside the Port Loyola preschool compound when his life was snuffed out. A single shot to his chest ended his life on the school’s veranda. The school authorities as well as his family are shocked about the murder in the school compound where classes started today.  News Five’s Duane Moody reports.

Around nine p.m. on Saturday night, a single gunshot rang out in the Port Loyola area near the basketball court at the intersection of Faber’s Road and Central American Boulevard. Police response was quick, because they were still processing another murder scene that occurred several blocks up on Pelican Street. But inside the Port Loyola Preschool Compound, investigators would find the body of thirty-eight-year-old security guard, Orson Stephens. He had been shot once to the back just outside his room attached to the front building.

“I called his phone about five times and no answer. By the time I finished calling, one of the teachers from the school; she called me via messenger saying that she heard my brother got shot on Pelican Street. As I put up the call from her, the principal called me telling me the same story. By the time I hang up, the police was at my gate saying that they need for me to come with them because it is sad to tell me that my brother passed. I went to them, but I was thinking we were going to Pelican Street. They stop at the school—I saw everything blocked off—and they said miss are you ready? I said yes and I went in and I saw him right where he was just playing his music and chilling and doing his job. He dropped right there on the veranda.”

“He was observed with a single gunshot wound to the left side of his chest.”

“Is there any known reason why he was targeted? A forty-eight-year-old working man who’s basically a watchman, no robbery element…”

ASP Alejandro Cowo

“Up to now we cannot establish a motive or the reason that he was shot.”

The senseless murder of Stephens has shocked the entire Port Loyola community as well as the school. Principal Elizabeth Pott says that she rushed over to the school to find his body being carted away by the police.

“I saw nothing because when I came, as I said they were taking him away in a police vehicle and I came in and I saw blood on the veranda. When they walked to the back, I saw some broken bottles like he was struggling and blood on the cement wall. Then the police came and they went to the back there and they found a pair of slippers like if the person had jumped over the fence.”

“This had to have been a shock for you, for the school in general. You said that this man was here even before you got here. How do you feel about the fact that he was on the job and his life was so callously taken?”

Elizabeth Pott

“Yes, it is rather hurtful. We feel it like it is one of our own because he is always here and you could always ask him, Orson please do this for me, Orson please get this water bottle to the back for me. He is just part of our family here at Port Loyola.”

It’s a frightening ordeal for the family because Stephens was killed at the place he called home for over a decade. His sister, Gwendolyn Jones describes him as a humble person, who didn’t say much and had no beef with anyone. The father of four children had a passion for maintaining bicycles.

Gwendolyn Jones

“I don’t know who that person is, but they really chance my brother out of his life. He is a humble person, he don’t mess around, he’s into no gangs, he fix his bicycle, he tends to his school for the past ten years. Always see him with his son; I only thank God that his son wasn’t with him at the moment. But whoever did that, they are a coward, because they didn’t came front on. I just want to tell them that God isn’t asleep; they will get what is coming for them. We are no people that will take justice into our hand because we believe in God and we know that justice will be served.”
