Belize Police Department Issues 7 Scholarships

Over on Queen Street, seven teenagers received full scholarships for one-year of studies courtesy of the Belize Police Department. A short ceremony was held at Precinct Three this afternoon where Deputy Commissioner of Police Chester Williams spoke about why the department saw the need to issue the scholarships.

“I saw the need to be able to do something like this because while we have a number of organizations out there that does give scholarships for children to go to school, sometimes the criteria that they set for the scholarship is difficult to be met by those children who really and truly go to school every day with only a bag on their backs and no books. They cannot compete with the man who goes to the school well equip. So we are trying to do something to lower the threshold. Instead of looking at a PSE mark of eighty and above, we will look at sixty and above. That way we will be able to capture those students who were not able to get an eighty on the PSE. Instead of maintaining a GPA of three point zero, we lower the threshold again to two point five. So we believe it is quite reasonable.”

The scholarships were sponsored by B.T.L., Ministry of Education, PricewaterhouseCoopers and the Belize Bank Limited.
