AG to Excuse Himself from UNCAC Meetings

Michael Peyrefitte

Despite the disparaging remarks made by the N.T.U.C.B. against the island nations of Tuvalu and Haiti back in March, a meeting with the UNCAC representatives has also been scheduled.  According to Attorney General Michael Peyrefitte, he is steering clear of the consultations in order to avoid the perception of influence by his office.

Michael Peyrefitte, Attorney General

“I think they should be.  I think they’re meeting with the unions and other people, but the unions or anybody, any social partner who wants to meet with them can send a letter to our office and our office will pass it on to them and say, look, you have for example the Media Association of Belize wants to meet with you.  Do you want to meet with them?  Let it be very, very clear, who they meet with and who they don’t meet with is up to them.  We don’t tell them who to meet with, they decide who to meet with and as much as I can I will be away from the process.  The technical people will be dealing with it, the Solicitor General will be on it, along with a crown counsel in the AG’s ministry who deals only with UNCAC and the different experts in the different line ministries.  So I will stay as far away from it as possible, unless they require my presence.  I do not want it to be said that we influenced in any way.”
