Two Fires in San Pedro
There were also two house fires in San Pedro. The first one happened in the early hours of Sunday in the San Pablo area. The wooden home was wiped out completely and the owner, who is out of the country, lost everything. The second blaze happened this afternoon around one o’clock on Pescador Drive where a deep fryer was left on. That fire happened inside a recently opened deli, but quick action contained the blaze and prevented it from spreading. Orin Smith of the National Fire Service speaks about these two incidents:
Orin Smith, Station Officer, Belize National Fire Service
“On Sunday, July first, 2018, the San Pedro branch of the National Fire Service responded to reports of a structural fire in the San Marcus area of San Pedro. Upon arrival, they found a bungalow plywood structure – it is a wooden structure with plywood and plycem siding with zinc roof fully engulfed in flames. After that fire was extinguished, the structure was destroyed by the fire. The occupants were not in the country at the time the fire occurred. The fire originated in the south-east corner of the structure. A cause has still not yet been determined. And today, Tuesday, July third, at one-fifty p.m., the San Pedro Branch of the National Fire Service received and responded to a report of a fire on the Pescador Drive in San Pedro. On arrival on scene, the lower flat of a two-story concrete structure was seen on fire. The lower flat of that structure housed two commercial establishments and the upper flat was for residential use. The commercial establishment, Street Side Gourmet, I believe, the fire originated within that establishment. The fire originated from a deep fat fryer that left on. Information revealed that the proprietor stated that he had just left the establishment and he learned that the structure was on fire. Investigation revealed that the fire originated from the deep fat fryer. He said he wasn’t so sure that it was left on or not, so it is an accidental fire rather than looking like of an intentional fire.”
