BUFERHD Says No to Re-Registration of Nationalized Guatemalans

Much has been said about the re-registering of Guatemalans who have acquired Belizean nationality.  The Belize Chamber of Commerce and Industry was the first to address the issue in a letter sent to the Prime Minister.  The Chamber objected to the fact that granting nationality to Guatemalans is against the constitution. Since the concern was raised, applications submitted by Guatemalans who want to become Belizean have been put on hold until the issue is addressed.  BUFERHD, Belizeans United for Equal Rights at Home and the Diaspora, is taking the matter further. The group does not want any nationalized Guatemalan to be able to re-register. President Dereck Aikman says he intends to challenge the matter in court.

Dereck Aikman, President, BUFERHD

“We will petition and put the Government on the spot to make a decision on a declaration on the world, either we are going to turn our back on Belizeans and accommodate the Guatemalans against the constitutions of this nation or we will make adjustable arrangements in the law to allow Belizeans living abroad if only to vote in the referendum. Maybe they have an issue with voting in other elections and that is a discussion for another time but we will petition the Government so that they make a decision one way or the other. If the decision is not the affirmative on behalf o the Diasporans then we take the matter for a constitutional challenge and ruling in the Supreme Court. Just as we will do if they proceed as they said they will and put Guatemalan back on the voters list to vote in the referendum next April. If they blatantly continue in spite of the calling out of them publicly on this unconstitutional matter then we will go for a constitutional challenge and ruling on the Supreme Court. No Guatemalan should be on the voters list while Guatemalan has a claim in Belize.”

Right on Aikman, you are the only one with intelligence voicing your opinion since this WEAK Government of both parties is afraid to say anything. No one should have citizenship if not born in Belize. They can have residency which is different. Eu
