Bystander Injured During Shootout in Calcutta

Police say they were called out to the scene of a shooting around eight-forty-five on Wednesday night in Calcutta Village, Corozal. A man who was standing behind a supermarket fired shots at the establishment’s security guard. The guard returned fire, but instead of hitting the armed man, a bullet caught bystander Phillip Rancharan in the leg. Rancharan was reportedly socializing in front of the supermarket. Inspector Wilfredo Ferrufino explains.

“Police responded to a shooting at community supermarket in Calcutta village. There on arrival, they spoke to the security of the business and he indicated that while standing in front of the establishment, he noticed two male persons approaching the supermarket and they movements were suspicious to him. And upon them seeing him, they fired at him and he returned fire. The two male persons fled the area and in the cross fire Philip Rancharan, thirty-year-old of Corozal, was injured in his right upper leg. The injuries are not life threatening and the matter is under investigation. Police have two persons of interest that they are looking for in regards to that matter.”
