Quality and Cost of Internet are Discussed at CarPIF

Quality and cost of internet in the region are also among the topics being discussed at CarPIF this year. While there have been significant strides made in these two areas over the years, these issues remain at the forefront of internet and telecommunications discussion in the Caribbean. Bevil Wooding explains how this kind of forum helps to get the dialogue going on affordable and quality internet connection in the region.

“The other thing that we will be looking at of course is the ongoing issue of quality and cost of service. A number of consumers across the Caribbean have been complaining that the cost of the internet is too high, the quality is too poor, and they are not getting value for money. These are the kinds of environments where the persons responsible for tackling the issues get together to look at the economics of internet traffic exchange. How does data or content get from one network to another or from one customer to another, whether it is inside of a country or between countries or to the world. So a big part of what the agenda is going to be looking at over the next two days is how do we improve the  quality of service delivery and how do we optimize on the value that we give consumers across the region who want a bigger, faster, more affordable internet.   Each CARPIF meeting follows up with local activities. In the case of Belize, we are planning to do is to have a technical training workshop for the ISPs in Belize to help continue to building out the technique for those networks and the technique for securing those networks. It is going to be an important part of taking things forward for Belize.”
