Life Sentences Times 4 for Brian Hyde

Brian Hyde

In April, a jury found him guilty of killing the family that took him in from Belize. Today, twenty-two-year-old Brian Omar Hyde learned that he will spend the rest of his life in prison, four times over, for doing so. However, the sentences will be served concurrently. In August 2015, Hyde used a machete to murder thirty-seven-year-old Dorla Pitts, his aunt and a nurse; his cousin, seventeen-year-old Starlette Pitts, and her boyfriend, nineteen-year-old Michael Kelly Junior. Starlette, the mother of a now four-year-old child, was also six months pregnant. The victims were found dead in their home after a family friend went to check on them. Hyde was arrested after he was pulled over by law enforcement for driving erratically. He was driving his deceased aunt’s car and had a bag packed in the trunk. During trial, Hyde testified that he did not remember killing his family and described his life in Belize where he worked in a grocery store. He also testified about the trauma he sustained in Belize where many of his family members were killed. Hyde was being re-tried after his first trial, in November, was declared a mistrial because his uncle inadvertently testified that Hyde was in the country illegally.
