Macaw Poachers Detained in Chiquibul

Two Guatemalans were detained inside the Chiquibul Forest some four kilometres from the western border on Wednesday. Rangers attached to Friends of Conservation and Development came upon a group of five men, later discovered to be poachers. Three of the men managed to escape, but the rangers successfully captured twenty-nine-year-old Edras Geovani Cantoral Garcia, originally of Honduras, and eighteen-year-old Elder Mauricio Diaz of Izabal, Guatemala. A point twenty-two rifle and two crocus bags were discovered at the camp site. One bag contained three curassows and a crested guan. The second bag contained clothing, food, ropes, and a pair of climbing spurs. Two separate bags each contained a scarlet macaw chick.  Both individuals were detained by the FCD and were escorted to the San Ignacio Police Station where they were handed over to the Police pending charges from the regulatory agencies.   According to a release issued by FCD, Garcia and Diaz informed the rangers that they were specifically on a search for macaws, which they would sell for approximately one thousand quetzals, the equivalent of three hundred Belize dollars, per bird. The poachers confirmed that buyers from the Peten Department would arrive either by car or motorcycle to purchase the birds at border villages such as La Rejoya. FCD has been actively working with Guatemalan counterparts over the last three years to combat this illegal wildlife trafficking that is posing a threat to the rare population of scarlet macaws. The macaws were estimated to be about seven weeks old and had been caught about four days before the poachers were apprehended. The birds were handed over to the Forestry Department.
